For modern Habanos, the Cuban warranty seal, individual barcode, Habanos denomination-of-origin seal and market-specific importer markings provide important evidence of provenance. For older and collectable boxes, those details must be considered in the context of the period in which the cigars were produced.
These are the principal identifiers to examine on modern Cuban cigar boxes. Packaging has evolved over time, so vintage boxes can legitimately carry earlier versions of seals and markings.
Modern boxes carry the Cuban Government warranty seal with security features including a hologram and an individual barcode. The unique code can be checked through the official Habanos authenticity service.
The Habanos denomination-of-origin seal, together with the markings on the underside of the box, helps establish origin, production method, factory information and box date.
Authorised markets can carry additional distributor or importer marks. In the UK duty-paid market, the best-known example is the English Market Selection, or EMS, stamp used by Hunters & Frankau.

A missing modern barcode does not by itself make an older box suspect. Warranty seals, tax marks, importer labels, factory codes and box markings have changed over the decades.
With vintage and rare cigars, authentication is therefore a broader assessment of period-correct packaging, provenance, construction and condition rather than a single digital check.
EMS stands for English Market Selection. Hunters & Frankau applies the EMS stamp to Havana cigars selected for the UK duty-paid market after an additional UK quality inspection.
The colour of the EMS stamp changes each year. It is a useful UK-market mark of provenance and quality, but it is not a universal requirement for an authentic Habano. Genuine boxes supplied through other authorised markets can carry different local distributor markings.
